The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election Sammy Douglas Kamau says armed, masked individuals attacked several polling stations, accusing them of attempting to disrupt voting as residents repelled the groups.

Speaking on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Kamau said the group first targeted Joseph Primary School before moving to other polling centres, including Simba, Mumbi, Huruma where he claimed residents forced them to leave.

He further said the group fired live ammunition as they retreated from the polling station displaying what he said were bullet cartridges recovered at the scene.

“A few minutes ago, some masked, armed goons attacked St. Joseph Primary. Before they left, they fired at our people. These are cartridges from what we believe were live bullets,” he said.

Civilian officers

The candidate urged security officers to remain in uniform and accused unidentified armed individuals of attempting to intimidate voters.

“People have voted and they are still voting. Let the people exercise their democratic right to vote. After that, we go to the tallying centre and know who the MP-elect is,” he said.

He also accused some UDA political rivals of sponsoring the attacks, claiming they were attempting to influence the outcome of the by-election.

Malala calls for calm

DCP deputy party leader, Cleophas Malala who accompanied the candidate called on residents to remain calm and assemble at their respective polling stations to monitor the counting and safeguarding of votes.

“We are confident that we have won. There is no cause for alarm. Everybody should regroup at their polling centre so that we count and guard our votes,” he said.

Malala also claimed there were plans to interfere with the tallying process but insisted the party would ensure the exercise remained peaceful.

“We are not going to be intimidated. We are not going to fall into the trap of causing chaos at the tail end of what has been a peaceful election,” he said.
