Kenya, US boost partnership on nuclear power and clean energy

Kenya is strengthening its partnership with the United States to advance cooperation in nuclear power, geothermal energy, clean cooking, and green industrialization.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Energy Principal Secretary (PS) Alex Wachira stated that he had an engagement with officials from the US Department of Energy during a high-level bilateral meeting to discuss ongoing and future collaborations in a meeting that was hosted by senior US officials. Wachira explained that the session focused on deepening energy cooperation and building stronger bilateral ties in technology-driven energy solutions for Kenya.

“Engaged with the leadership at the US Department of Energy during a bilateral session focusing on moving forward the US-Kenya Energy cooperation. This high-level delegation exemplifies the strong relations Kenya is building with the US government in nuclear power development, geothermal exploitation, clean cooking and green industrialisation,” Wachira stated in his X post.

“The meeting was chaired by Kyle Haustveit, Assistant Secretary, Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office, accompanied by William Schirano, who serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multilateral Engagement and Market Development at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE),” PS Wachira wrote in his X post.

The PS added that the US government recognised Kenya’s progress under existing nuclear agreements and offered support for geothermal energy technology adoption.

“The US government acknowledged Kenya’s progress in the 1,2,3 agreements in our quest to develop nuclear power, and offered to assist Kenya in tapping into binary systems and technologies in geothermal,” Wachira wrote.

The Principal Secretary also further stated that the session provided an opportunity to invite US officials to upcoming energy-focused summits in Kenya, including nuclear, investment, and clean cooking forums.

“We took this opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing cooperation with the US Department of Energy and invited them to the upcoming energy summits in Kenya, namely, ICONE (nuclear), KIICO2026 (Investment) and the Clean Cooking Summit,” PS Wachira Wrote.
