Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira has dismissed suggestions by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku that the Mount Kenya region should be divided into two political blocs.

Speaking at Irigithathi Primary School in Kieni Constituency on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, where he shared Christmas donations with the locals, Wachira said there was no justification for splitting a region that has historically remained united.

He insisted that Mt Kenya would continue to operate as one political bloc under President William Ruto’s leadership.

“I have seen CS Ruku suggesting that there should be two political titles — one for Mt Kenya East and another for Mt Kenya West. He is out of order,” Wachira said.

“The region is one and will remain united under President William Ruto’s political patronage. He should understand that the Mt Kenya title has always been one for decades.”

Wachira’s remarks came after Ruku, while speaking in Embu, was quoted saying that the region should consider adopting two political identities, a move that would effectively divide its political influence.

The proposal has since generated mixed reactions, drawing both support and condemnation. Some leaders and residents have accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of attempting to divide the region for political convenience, while others view the debate as part of evolving political realignments.

Wachira maintained that Mt Kenya remains a key political battleground and said its unity would strengthen its bargaining power in future national leadership contests. He added that the region stands a strong chance of reclaiming national leadership if it remains cohesive.

“We should be patient as a region, allow President Ruto to complete his term, and then seek the presidency in 2032. That is our best bet,” Wachira said.

He urged leaders from the region to avoid divisive rhetoric and instead focus on unity and development, noting that political fragmentation would only weaken Mt Kenya’s influence on the national stage.
