Kenya targets Europe’s herbal market as exports diversify beyond tea, coffee
Kenya is moving to expand its herbal and spice exports to Europe, driven by rising demand for natural and sustainable products.
According to a post on X on Saturday, October 25, 2025, the Kenyan Embassy in Brussels said interest in Kenya’s herbs and spices continues to grow across Europe, signalling new trade opportunities under the Kenya-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
“The exceptional interest in Kenya’s herbs and spices reflects a growing global shift toward sustainability and natural health remedies,” the Embassy said. “Signaling a bright future for Kenya’s herbal and spice exports in the European and global market, a commodity that the Embassy will enhance.”
At a recent trade event in Brussels, visitors sampled Kenyan coffee and tea while learning about the country’s biodiversity and culture. The Embassy noted that Kenyan coffee remains highly sought after in Europe and that Kenyan tea is gaining recognition in new markets.
“Proudly made in Kenya” products, including herbs, spices, coffee, and tea, were showcased to highlight the country’s agricultural diversity. The Embassy thanked the European Union for supporting Kenya’s trade efforts, saying the opportunity strengthens the implementation of the Kenya-EU EPA.

Herbs to boost exports
Kenya is looking to widen its exports to Europe by adding herbs and spices to its trade basket. The move comes as the country builds on its solid record in agriculture and horticulture. Kenya already leads Africa’s cut-flower trade, sending about 70 per cent of its blooms to the European Union each year.
The new focus on herbs such as ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, hibiscus and moringa aims to spread export income and reduce dependence on long-standing products like tea and coffee.
The Kenyan Embassy in Brussels said it is working with farmers and exporters to improve production, packaging and quality control so that the goods meet European standards. The mission also plans to support branding of Kenyan herbs and spices as clean, traceable and naturally grown products.
