Kenya Railways is expanding regional trade with its two vessels, MV Uhuru I and MV Uhuru II, operating on Lake Victoria. The ships run from Kisumu Port and connect Kenya with Uganda and Tanzania, carrying vital goods across the region.

The vessels transport a wide range of cargo, including steel billets, hot-rolled coils, sugar, grain bulk, iron sheets, Automotive Gas Oil, and cement. They serve the ports of Jinja and Port Bell in Uganda, and Mwanza in Tanzania, ensuring that essential goods move efficiently across East Africa.

“Each ship boasts a deck space of 1,800 square metres and can carry up to 1,500 tonnes per trip, ensuring efficient, reliable and safe movement of goods across the region,” Kenya Railways stated in an X post on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

This capacity allows the ships to handle large shipments, supporting businesses and industries that rely on timely delivery of materials. Kenya Railways operates the vessels on a schedule of roughly three trips per week, keeping trade flows consistent and reliable.

Strengthening regional trade

The MV Uhuru vessels complete the logistics chain from the Port of Mombasa to Lake Victoria. Cargo shipped from the Indian Ocean ports can reach inland East Africa without relying solely on road or rail, reducing congestion and easing the burden on other transport networks.

By linking the lake ports to Mombasa, the vessels strengthen last-mile connectivity, making it easier for goods to reach businesses and consumers across the region.

The operation of MV Uhuru I and II demonstrates Kenya Railways’ commitment to sustainable and efficient transport. Water transport is less energy-intensive than road haulage, and the vessels offer a safe option for moving heavy and bulky cargo.

Each voyage not only delivers goods but also contributes to the growth of regional economies by facilitating trade between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Kenya Railways continues to invest in its Lake Victoria services as part of a broader strategy to integrate inland and maritime transport. The vessels have become key players in regional trade, ensuring that industries receive essential raw materials while creating opportunities for exporters to reach new markets.
