Kenya Power has set up a liaison office from where the utility company will work with stakeholders to develop an e-mobility ecosystem.

Acting Managing director Geoffrey Muli said the ecosystem will include the identification of sites for potential charging stations, facilitation of connectivity and the testing of e-vehicles for potential investors.

The initiative is a step up in preparations for KP’s efforts to adopt sustainable ways of doing business announced last month through a $331,372 (Sh40.1 million) pilot project.

The capital outlay will enable KP to buy three electric vehicles, two pick-ups and one four-wheel drive, as well as the construction of three electric vehicle charging stations in Nairobi for a demonstration to the public.

The company plans to buy an additional fleet of 600, 50-long-range e-motorbikes and 2070 vehicles.

Muli made the announcement on Wednesday at the launch of ROAM Electric’s mass transit electric bus at the Green park terminus in Nairobi.
