Joho unveils training plan to enhance fish production
Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho wants fish farmers to be trained in modern fishing techniques to boost the industry. The newly appointed minister said adoption of modern techniques will enable the farmers to enhance productivity and contribute to the overall growth of the blue economy.
Introduction of new technologies, he added, will in addition to improving farming also reduce the pressure exerted on the Lake and Ocean resources by traditional fishing. Joho who spoke during his inaugural tour of the fish landing sites in Ogal and Asat beaches on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu County envisioned a future where old fishing traditions and technology would harmoniously merge, transforming the fishing sector into a powerhouse of economic growth and sustainability.
Earlier he paid a courtesy call to Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o at his County Hall office where he was briefed on some ongoing projects and challenges in the Lake port and blue economy. Joho said his primary aim in the ministry is to come up with comprehensive training programmes for fish farmers across Kenya to boost their income per capita.
“These programmes aim to equip farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to implement modern fishing practices effectively,’’ he said added.
The training will cover various aspects, including sustainable fishing methods, advanced aquaculture techniques, and the use of technology in monitoring and managing fish stocks. Nyong’o lamented the deaths from the Lake.
“Over 5000 people die in the Lake annually from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. You need to address marine accidents,’’ he told the CS.
Fishermen from selected beaches such as Ogal, and Asat, will be chosen to undergo training in the advanced fishing methods.
