CFAO Mobility Kenya launches Toyota’s first fully electric vehicle in Kenya

By , June 18, 2026

CFAO Mobility Kenya has introduced the CFAO Mobility Kenya as the official distributor of Toyota vehicles, marking a key moment in the country’s electric vehicle market.

The company has launched the Toyota bZ4X in Nairobi, making it Toyota’s first fully electric SUV available in Kenya.

The launch reflects growing interest in electric mobility in Kenya, where EV adoption has passed 35,000 units as of 2025. The bZ4X enters a market that is still developing but expanding quickly, supported by charging infrastructure growth and government support for cleaner transport.

“The future of mobility has arrived. Meet the all-new Toyota bZ4X, Toyota’s first-ever fully electric vehicle, now officially launched in Kenya,” Toyota, through CFAO Mobility Kenya, stated in an X post.

Toyota enters Kenya’s EV market

The Toyota bZ4X is built under Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” vision, which focuses on reducing emissions while maintaining durability and reliability. Toyota has long been known in Kenya for vehicles that perform well on rough roads and long distances. The bZ4X is designed to continue that reputation in an electric format.

“The bZ4X represents the next chapter in mobility. With its zero-emissions, impressive range and standard-setting safety features, this innovative SUV ensures our customers don’t have to choose between cutting-edge electric performance and trusted, durable engineering,” CFAO Mobility Kenya Managing Director Arvinder Reel stated.

Battery, range and performance

The bZ4X runs on a 73.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. It offers a driving range of up to 516 km on a full charge, depending on driving conditions. The all-wheel-drive version produces 160 kW (215 hp) and 337 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.1 seconds.

Power is delivered through a single-speed eAxle transmission, which ensures smooth and quiet acceleration. The SUV also features multiple drive modes, including Eco and X-MODE with Grip Control for low-traction surfaces such as mud or wet roads.

Toyota designed the vehicle on the e-TNGA platform, which improves stability by lowering the centre of gravity and increasing body rigidity.

Charging and battery life

Charging the bZ4X is practical for daily use. With a 150 kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. This makes it suitable for urban drivers and long-distance travel with planned stops.

The vehicle also comes with an 8-year or 120,000 km battery warranty, which supports buyer confidence in long-term ownership. CFAO Mobility Kenya adds after-sales support through its nationwide network of 43 branches and service centres, helping reduce concerns about EV maintenance.

Design, size and comfort

The bZ4X measures 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,850 mm wheelbase. It sits on 20-inch alloy wheels and offers a ground clearance of up to 213 mm, making it suitable for both urban and rougher rural roads.

Inside, Toyota uses a “Family Lounge” design concept. The cabin includes synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, lumbar support, and a panoramic sunroof. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen supports smartphone connectivity and controls audio through a 6-speaker system.

Safety features include Toyota Safety Sense, which offers systems such as Pre-Collision warning, Lane Trace Assist, multiple airbags, and electronic stability control.

Built for Kenyan conditions

The bZ4X is positioned as an SUV that can handle Kenyan driving conditions. It offers 500 mm wading depth and Multi-Terrain Select for improved control on difficult surfaces. Downhill Assist Control helps when driving on steep terrain.

CFAO Mobility Kenya Deputy Managing Director Joshua Anya said:

“The Toyota bZ4X takes a step in Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy towards carbon neutrality, delivering a vehicle that provides value well beyond zero emissions, but the all-electric car does so in style.”

These features place the vehicle among the more capable electric SUVs in its category, especially for markets where road conditions vary widely.

CFAO Mobility Kenya’s wide service network is a key advantage for early EV adoption. Electric vehicles require trained technicians and reliable parts support, and Toyota has invested in this area through global EV expertise and local training.

The bZ4X’s entry also reflects a shift in Kenya’s automotive market. While electric two- and three-wheelers currently dominate, passenger EVs are gaining attention as infrastructure improves in cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
