Airtel gives an update after service disruption on M-Pesa to Airtel Money transfers
Airtel Kenya has confirmed the resumption of normal operations after a temporary service disruption that affected money transfers from M-PESA to Airtel Money.
According to the statement released on Friday, December 12, 2025, the telco had identified failures in the interoperability channel that allows users to send funds from Safaricom’s M-Pesa platform to Airtel Money wallets.
Temporal disruptions
”Please note that sending money from M-Pesa to Airtel Money is experiencing failures,” the statement said in part.
In the announcement, Airtel assured customers that the issue is being treated with urgency. The company confirmed that its technical team is actively collaborating with the M-Pesa team to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. Customers will be notified immediately once normal service resumes.
”We are working with M-Pesa to resolve this on priority and will notify you once the issue is resolved,” it added.

Despite the disruption affecting incoming transfers from M-Pesa, Airtel emphasised that all other Airtel Money services remain fully operational. Users can still:
Transfer money from their bank accounts to Airtel Money
Deposit cash at Airtel Money agents nationwide
Access services at KCB and Naivas outlets countrywide
Use the USSD code *334# to manage their Airtel Money accounts
Mpesa disruptions
In September, Safaricom also announced a scheduled three-hour outage for its M-Pesa mobile money service to carry out a critical system upgrade.
The maintenance temporarily halted all M-Pesa functions, including airtime purchases and money transfers.
In its statement titled “M-PESA UPGRADE,” Safaricom reflected on the service’s significance, saying, “For 18 years, M-PESA has continued to transform lives across Kenya, connecting you, our customers, to opportunities every day,” Safaricom announced via its official X account on September 19, 2025.
The company described the upgrade as essential to maintaining secure, reliable, and worry-free financial services. “To support this and meet our promise to offer always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade,” read the statement.
“We will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade on Monday, 22nd September 2025, from 0:30 am to 3:30 am.” The statement added.
