Azimio endorses Junet, Millie Odhiambo for parliamentary leadership positions

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition joint parliamentary group has unanimously endorsed two members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for parliamentary leadership positions.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna disclosed that the Azimio coalition approved the appointment of Suna East Member of Parliament MP Junet Mohamed as the Minority Leader and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo as the Whip in the National Assembly.

The ODM Secretary General further revealed that the party is grateful for the support they have received from the coalition constituent parties.

“The Azimio PG meeting has unanimously endorsed the proposals from @TheODMparty to appoint Hon Junet Mohamed and Hon Millie Odhiambo as the new Minority Leader and Whip in the National Assembly respectively. On behalf of ODM, I thank all the Azimio constituent parties for their support and wish the two leaders well in their new positions,” Sifuna said.

ODM’s endorsement

On July 31, 2024, the Central Management Committee of the ODM, made changes on its leadership positioning the national assembly.

The Committee settled for Junet Mohamed as the Minority Leader, Millie Odhiambo for the role of Minority Whip, Caleb Amisi to take up the role of Chair Public Accounts Committee, and Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo to take up the seat of Vice Chair.

“As far as the vacancies in the Party’s Parliamentary leadership, the committee will be proposing to the Azimio PG that; the Hon Junet Mohamed take up the role of Minority Leader vacated by the Hon Wandayi; the Hon Millie Odhiambo take up the role of Minority Whip; and that the Hon Caleb Amisi take up the role of Chair PAC left vacant by Hon Mbadi and lastly Hon. (Wilberforce) Oundo to take up the seat of Vice Chair,” Raila said.

The committee chairman Raila Odinga further stated that ODM received the resignations of the party officials who were nominated for Cabinet Secretaries position by President William Ruto.

“The party has officially released its officials who were recently tapped by President William Ruto for national duty as Cabinet secretaries. I confirm that I have received the resignations of Hon John Mbadi as National Chairperson, Hon Opiyo Wandayi as Secretary for Political Affairs, H.E Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Joho as Deputy Party Leaders, and Beatrice Askul Moe as a member of the Party Elections Committee,”
