A section of Kiambu Members of County Assembly (MCAs) elects have warned area governor Kimani Wamatangi against interfering with the affairs of the Assembly.

They say that it should dawn on the governor that all three arms of county government namely the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary are independent and hence he should stick to his lane.

The MCAs alleged that the governor intends to influence the selection of the County Assembly’s House business leadership by planting his cronies.

Addressing the media in Limuru, the civic leaders who spoke appealed to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)’s top leadership to ensure that the selection of the Assembly’s Leader of the Majority, Deputy Majority Leader, the Chief Whip and Deputy Whip will be conducted transparently.

They alleged that, even before they are sworn in, the governor has already put up his own lineup without involving them warning that the same will expose him to untold rebellion.

“We are reliably informed that the governor who is yet to convene a meeting with us since we were elected has his favourite team which he wants to force us to support after we are sworn in on Thursday”, an MCA from Kiambu West said.

The 53 MCAs who are from UDA and those elected as Independent candidates had met at Kiboko Highway hotel in Limuru constituency for the second time since they were elected where it was agreed that the House Leadership should be evenly distributed between Kiambu West and East.

Kiambu county has 12 constituencies and 60 wards with West constituencies comprising Limuru, Kiambu Town, Kiambaa, Kabete, Lari, Kikuyu and Githunguri.

Kiambu East has Thika Town, Juja, Ruiru, Gatundu South, and Gatundu North.

According to the MCAs, the position of Majority leader was set aside for Kiambu West owing to the fact that they produced the highest number of civic leaders compared to East.

“Today, we held a closed-door meeting where we unanimously agreed to share the positions fairly and freely so that no region will be left out in the running of the Assembly. We, therefore, can’t sit back and watch as Wamatangi imposes leaders on us”, an MCA from Thika said.

He added; “The news came as surprise when we heard that some names had been forwarded to the UDA secretariat. We should be told and even be involved. We had our own proposals of MCAs who we wanted to occupy those seats”.

The MCAs said lack of transparency may become one of the biggest challenges in the county leadership and development, given that disagreements have started to emerge even before they are sworn in.

Kiambu county UDA coordinator Susan Wangui told journalists in a phone interview that those posts selections are supposed to be conducted in a free and fair way.

She however said that the governor being the county boss has a stake in the exercise adding that it is upon the governor to handle such allegations.

“We were only involved to ensure we lobby people to support our party and candidates. However, we cannot comment on that issue and advise you to go to the governor” she said.

Our efforts to get a comment from the governor were futile with him and his Personal Assistant not responding to either our calls or our short messages (SMSes).
