Senator Kibiru concedes defeat as Waiguru leads in governor race
Kirinyaga County Senator Charles Kibiru has conceded defeat in the ongoing race to unseat the incumbent Governor Ann Waiguru following Tuesday’s elections.
The outgoing senator was vying on a Jubilee Party ticket and was going head-on with the incumbent Governor Waiguru and Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici.
Ngirici was vying for the seat on an independent ticket.
Others in the race were former Mwea MP Peter Gitau and Comba Ndau of KADU Asili party.
Waiguru takes lead
Waiguru is currently leading as vote tally continues.
Earlier last week, Muriithi Kagai who was vying on a Narc Kenya Party ticket backed down in favor of Senator Charles Kibiru.
But regardless of Kagai stepping down to give way for Kibiru, his (Kagai’s) name was still on the ballot since the deal was brokered after the ballot papers had been printed.
“I take this early opportunity to accept and respect the choice of Kirinyaga voters in relation to the just concluded gubernatorial election where I was a candidate,” Kibiru wrote on his Facebook page.
Kibiru thanked his supporters as well as his running mate, the current Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri.
“I wish to thank all my supporters, my electoral team, friends, my running mate Hon. Peter Ndambiri and my family for your support during the entire electioneering period,” he said.
Kibiru said he will now concentrate on various private businesses.
