The owner of a matatu that was involved in an accident that ended in the death of Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua’s daughter has been fined a Sh35,000 or three months imprisonment.

Godfrey Gitonga Maina was sentenced by Milimani magistrate Esther Kimilu after he pleaded guilty to a charge of permitting his unroadworthy motor vehicle registration number KBR 065B a lsuzu mini bus operated by KMO Sacco to be driven on the road on June 17 this year.

The arraignment of Gitonga comes after on Friday Kangemi Matatu Owners (KMO) SACCO was suspended for fourteen days.

The SACCO was suspended after an incident where Gitonga’s driver Patrick Macharia Magu was charged in court on Monday causing the death of Meline Waithera Njoroge, the daughter of Deputy Inspector General Edward Mbugua.

The vehicles should go through mandatory inspection and their crew members will be compelled to produce substantial documents before they are permitted back on the road.

On June 17, this year, Magu is said to have been involved in an accident at the junction of Tom Mboya Street and Muragua lane killing Meline Waithera, 25, daughter of DIG Edward Mbugua.

The police alleges that Machari reversed the motor vehicle dangerously without due care to other road users and sandwiched a pedestrian namely Waithera between another motor vehicle.

It is said that Waithera sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she succumbed. Waithera’s body was taken to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home for preservation and postmortem.

Magu upon realising his mistake, abandoned the minibus at the scene and fled to evade arrest.

He was later traced and arrested along University Way and detained at Central police station and on Friday morning arraigned in court where police were granted more time to complete investigations into the matter.

The driver has since been released on Sh 300,000 cash bail pending the hearing of his case.
