Leaders of the United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) in Nandi have called out the National Police Service in what they referred to as harassments from police especially when they convened political meetings.

The leaders pointed out a Thursday, June 3 incident where police dispered a UDA aspirants meeting in Kibwareng, Nandi County.

“We had taken into consideration all the Covid-19 protocols. From social distancing to ensuring everyone had a mask,” the UDA Nandi County coordinator said.

The disruption of the party’s Thursday meeting in Nandi happened some hours after police stormed another party meeting in Mombasa.

Police called off the meeting convened by Former Machakos senator Johnston Muthama in Nyali Mombasa citing violation of Covid-19 protocols.

The meeting, which had brought together UDA party aspirants from the Coast, ended prematurely after police hurled teargas canisters to disperse them.

Muthama, the party chairman, was forced to cut short his speech and drive off from the hotel to avoid police arrest

The meeting had been scheduled at Terrace Villa Resort, located in Nyali.

“It was a private meeting, they were not many. The number was within the required threshold. We did not intend to take long but we are disappointed that disrupted the meeting,” Muthama told journalists.
