Moses Kuria’s candidate Koimburi beats Jubilee to win Juja seat
George Koimburi of the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) is the Member of Parliament-elect for Juja constituency after he garnered 12,159 votes.
Koimburi’s closest competitor Susan Njeri of Jubilee Party came second with 5,746 votes in the hotly contested race.
Joseph Gichui, an independent candidate came a distant third garnering 1,356 votes in a race that attracted 11 contenders.
The race which was seen as a duel between Koimburi whose party belongs to Moses Kuria, and Jubilee Party was marred with chaos during the tallying of votes at Mang’u High School after a group of individuals disrupted the process. PEP is also affiliated with Deputy President William Ruto.
The chaos led to suspension of tallying for the entire night before the exercise resumed on Wednesday morning when Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati intervened.
Jubilee Party suffered a loud defeat in the process despite putting up a strong campaign team led by Kiambu Governor James Nyoro and Women representative Gathoni Wamuchomba alongside a number of Kiambu MPs.
Selection of a weak candidate, low mobilization of voters are reported to be among the factors that led to the embarrassing defeat.
“We hear Jubilee party had given enough money for mobilization activity but the impact was not felt on the ground. The results are inconsolable defeat,” said a Jubilee Party supporter who sought anonymity.
However, a section of leaders who spearheaded the Jubilee party campaign had earlier disputed the results claiming the exercise was marred with irregularities and was entirely flawed.
Led by Kiambu Town MP Jude Njomo, Jubilee enthusiasts called on IEBC to repeat the counting of votes lest they move to court to quash announcement of Koimburi as the next MP for the vast constituency.
The contest only saw 18.91 percent of the 115,632 registered voters in the constituency cast their votes.
