Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba yesterday disclosed that the country had for the first time since the introduction of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in the 1980s witnessed more female than male candidates

CS Ogamba said that a total of 14 counties had significant entry of more female than male candidates.

Among the counties where more girls than boys sat for KCSE include Vihiga with 55.15 per cent girls against 44.85 per cent boys, Elgeyo Marakwet with 53.76 per cent against 46.24 per cent, and Kirinyaga with 51.46 per cent against 48.54 per cent.

Similarly, Meru County had 51.69 per cent against 48.31 per cent, Kiambu had 52.78 per cent against 47.22 per cent, Nairobi had 52.41 per cent against 47.59 per cent while Kisumu had 52.39 per cent against 47.61 per cent.

Kitui also registered 51.14 per cent girls compared to 48.86 boys per cent, similar with Taita Taveta with 51.45 per cent against 48.55 per cent, neighbours Kwale with 53.31 per cent against 46.69 per cent and Isiolo with 52.11 per cent against 47.89 per cent.

The same trend was witnessed in Tharaka Nithi which had 52.06 per cent against 47.94 per cent, Kakamega with 51.80 per cent against 48.20 per cent, and Uasin Gishu with 51.06 per cent against 48.94 per cent.

Another 14 counties had recorded more male than female candidates in 2024 KCSE exam.

They included Garissa which had 62.8 per cent against 37.17 per cent, Mandera with 63.83 per cent against 36.17 per cent, Wajir with 60.27 per cent against 39.73 per cent and Turkana which had 59.64 per cent against 40.36 per cent.

The list also includes Samburu which had 53.41 per cent against 46.59 per cent, Narok with 52.77 per cent against 47.23 per cent, Homa Bay with 52.81 per cent against 47.19 per cent, West Pokot which had 53.52 per cent against 46.48 per cent and Mombasa with 51.31 per cent against 48.83 per cent.
