Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League champions Butali Warriors are still the team to beat after maintaining their stay at the top of the table following a 5-0 win over Strathmore University Gladiators last weekend.

The win sees Butali remain at the top with 30 points from 12 matches after nine wins and three draws while the students have won three, lost eight and drawn one.

Saturday’s win follows a 7-0 victory over Strathmore in the first leg of the season in May, which was then the worst result by the students in the top flight.

The defeat leaves 2016 winners Strathmore in eighth position with just 10 points, 20 behind Butali, whose coach Dennis Owoka was encouraged by the students’ display. 

“We were favourites to win the weekend’s match having dominated Gladiators by winning six out of our last seven encounters. But it is one of the tricky games and credit to my boys for containing them,” said Owoka.

In another men’s Premier League match, United States International University Africa (USIU-A) defeated Greensharks by a solitary goal while debutants Lakers ensured Kenyatta University (KU) Titans continue their search for a maiden victory after the sides settled for a barren draw in the women’s equivalent. 

In another women’s Premier League match, Strathmore University Scorpions beat winless Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) 4-0 as fast-rising Amira Sailors dented the confidence of USIU whom they edged 2-1.

In the veterans category, it was humour and joy as former Armed Forces players trooped back to the pitch for their first Masters League game which saw them dismiss high-riding Impala Veterans 4-1.
