Residents of Ngunguru village in Kiharu Murang’a want a quarry in their area closed down claiming that it poses a threat to them.

The residents claimed that the construction company blasting the quarry has been rolling boulders down to their homesteads.

One family narrowly escaped death by a whisker after a one-ton boulder rolled down crashing their house on Wednesday.

The three family members who were present however managed to rush to safety and escaped unhurt.

The boulder that demolished some houses at a home in Murang’a on Wednesday.

Stephen Njoka one of the residents said they heard a loud bang before seeing the boulder rolling down.

“The quarry is about 200 meters from our home and the stone caused huge damage to our house,” said Njoka.

“We have been forced to seek accommodation at our neighbour’s home because the house is no longer habitable,” added Njoka.

He, however, said the company has agreed to build another house for them.

The residents claim that this is not the first time boulders are rolling down to their homesteads and this poses a risk to them.

Nancy Wanjiku another resident said barely two months ago another boulder rolled down from the quarry landing on her farm.

She claimed that efforts to seek intervention from the relevant authorities have been futile.

“We want this quarry closed immediately because it poses a threat to us” she said.

“We are spending sleepless nights fearing that more boulders might roll down and crash our houses” she added.
