Former Athi water director Betty Maina has emerged the winner in the UDA party nominations for the position of woman representative in Murang’a county.

Betty took the lead with 85,205 votes followed by Lucy Ngugi with 28,092 and Rebecca Waruguru came in third with 20,264 votes.

Betty resigned from her position in February to vie for the seat and become the second woman representative in the county.

While celebrating her victory in the nominations, she exuded confidence to clinch the seat in the upcoming August poll.

She also lauded the UDA party leaders and coordinators for conducting free and fair nominations saying all candidates were given a fair platform.

“We did not have any issues in Murang’a, the exercise was smooth and credit goes to those coordinators,” she said.

She said the UDA brigade will work together and go to all parts of the county drumming up support for its candidates to ensure they all win in the general elections.

Waruguru on her part conceded defeat and promised to help Betty in her campaigns to win the seat.

She said this was her first attempt and thus she won’t give up trying her luck next time.

“I am actually surprised I got such a high number of votes because this was my first attempt, but the defeat won’t dampen my spirit,” she said.

Betty will now be facing off with former radio presenter Waithira Muithirania who is vying on a Jubilee party ticket, Beth Waithira vying with the Farmers party and Frashia Muthoni who is in Usawa Kwa Wote party.
