Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced disruptions to some of their flights at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

KQ in a statement issued on Thursday, December 12, 2024, stated that the anticipated disruptions are minor, and will affect both departures and arrivals to some of their flights.

According to the national carrier, the disruptions are as a result of closure of a runway at JKIA for military drills relating to the 2024 Jamhuri Day celebrations.

KQ has, however, assured its customers of the normal resumption of operations by 7:00 pm.

“Due to the runway closure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for military drills relating to Jamhuri Day celebrations, we anticipate minor disruptions for some of our flight departures and arrivals at JKIA. We anticipate recovering our normal operations by 7pm today,” KQ stated.

KQ apologises

The airline went ahead to apologise to its customers for the inconveniences caused and gave a further assurance that their teams are working to ensure a smooth travel experience for all.

Moreover, customers have been urged to regularly check the national carrier’s website for any updates on their flights.

Military air show

During national celebrations, the Kenya Air Force (KAF) of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) normally perform a fly-past over the venue of the event.

The military aircraft display and flypast is symbolic, mostly to show the president how the country’s sky is safe from any external attacks. Military helicopters are also flown carrying banners with a specific message aligned with the event of the day.

To pull such a show, runways of the nearby airports might be affected to allow the drills to take place.

This year’s Jamhuri Day Celebration was held at the historical Uhuru Gardens along along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi.
