Kesogon Secondary School in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, has emerged as a prominent hub for some of Kenya’s top volleyball talent. Known for its strong volleyball program, the school has consistently produced players who have excelled at both regional and national levels, contributing significantly to Kenya’s growing reputation in the sport.

Deborah Jesang, a 21-year-old star currently playing for the KCB Women’s Volleyball team, is one of the school’s standout alumni.

Joining Japheth Munala’s squad earlier this year, Jesang’s ball-striking prowess has quickly made her a mainstay, securing her position among Kenya’s rising volleyball talents.

Discovering volleyball

Born in Burnt Forest, Uasin Gishu County, in a family of 10, Jesang and one of her older brothers are the only family members involved in volleyball. Although her brother never turned professional, his participation in local street competitions sparked her interest in the sport.

Surprisingly, Jesang didn’t play volleyball at the primary school level. It wasn’t until she joined Kesogon Secondary School that she began her volleyball journey, making her debut in Form 2.

She progressed quickly, competing in zonal, regional, and national tournaments. In 2022, she was part of the team that represented Kenya at the East African Games in Tanzania and later, in Rwanda in 2023, where they finished as runners-up to Kwanthanze Secondary School.

However, they clinched victory over Kwanthanze at the 2023 National School Games in Kakamega County, winning 3-1 in a thrilling final.

During the national competition, Jesang earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, catching the attention of seasoned coach Japheth Munala.

Earning a spot

She joined KCB in January 2024 and immediately impacted the team, securing a place in the squad that competed at the African Club Championship in Egypt.

Despite KCB finishing fourth, Jesang was named Best Right Attacker, solidifying her role in the team.

Unfortunately, Jesang sustained an injury during the first two matches of the 2024 KVF league playoffs and could not complete the tournament.

However, KCB went on to defend their title, securing back-to-back wins in Kenya’s topflight competition.

Jesang admires Malkia Strikers’ captain Mercy Moim, arguably Kenya’s top volleyball player. Now teammates at KCB, Jesang is inspired to follow in Moim’s footsteps, who has led the sport for nearly two decades.

Despite her humble beginnings, Jesang dreams of playing in Japan’s Women’s National League, a feat she believes would make her parents proud. She acknowledges the challenge but assures her fans that she is up to the task.

Jesang is also looking forward to enrolling in university next year to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

To young volleyball enthusiasts aiming to follow her path, Jesang emphasizes the importance of courage, discipline, and confidence. With aspirations to join the Malkia Strikers and represent Kenya in international events, Jesang is determined to elevate Kenya’s profile as a sports powerhouse.
