Kenya Railways has temporarily suspended Nairobi commuter train services to allow for the commemoration of Mazingira Day celebrations on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
In a notice to commuters, Kenya Railways explained that services would be unavailable for the rest of the day but would resume on Friday, October 11, 2024.
The temporary suspension of service will affect trains serving between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West, and Limuru.
Nonetheless, Kenya Railways informed its customers that the Link Train which mainly ferries passengers using the SGR will remain operational.
“We wish to notify members of the public that on October 10 2024, in observance of Mazingira Day, the Nairobi Commuter Rail service will be suspended, with the exception of the Link Train that operates between Nairobi Central Railway station and Nairobi Terminus,” the statement read in part.
“The suspension affects the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service trains serving between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West, and Limuru. The service will resume on October 11, 2024. Kenya Railways is committed to providing reliable, convenient and safe rail services. Thank you for your continued support,” it added.
Other train services will not be affected by the temporary suspension of the Nairobi commuter trains.
Mazingira Day
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale will preside over Mazingira Day celebrations on Thursday, October 9, 2024.
The celebrations will be staged at the Nairobi Arboretum and commence at 8 am.
In his statement, Duale expressed the government’s commitment to addressing climate change and protecting the environment.
Duale highlighted various initiatives including a 15 billion tree planting exercise and the newly launched Climate WorX aimed at cleaning the Nairobi River.
“As we mark this first-ever Mazingira Day, we take pride in the transformative actions the Government is spearheading to combat climate change and safeguard our environment.
“Through groundbreaking programs such as Climate WorX and the 15 billion trees by 2032 initiatives, we are restoring forest cover, cleaning blue spaces and strengthening ecosystems, while tackling the pressing challenges of climate change,” he stated.
“These efforts form a crucial pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), driving green job creation, enhancing food security and fostering sustainable development,” he added.
Duale thus challenged Kenyans to plant trees during this Mazingira Day public holiday.
