Mombasa County plans to revitalize its tourism sector, aiming to cater to the growing demographic of younger travellers, and tackle rising competition from emerging destinations.

Recognizing a shift from traditional, older tourists to a younger generation seeking unique experiences, the County aims to introduce innovative attractions that appeal to both local and international tourists.

County Executive Committee Member for Trade and Tourism, Mohamed Osman, and Chief Officer Pauline Oginga announced a series of exciting activities as part of the upcoming UN World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations, which will highlight Mombasa’s rich culture and diverse attractions.

“Throughout this tourism week, we’ve organized an array of activities, including a Carnival Walk and Parade, a Food Bazaar, and a Tuk Tuk Rally and Drifting Showcase—a first for Mombasa,” Osman shared during a press briefing at Mama Ngina Waterfront.

The festivities will kick off with a warm welcome for international visitors arriving at Moi International Airport, featuring traditional dances and gifts to create an unforgettable first impression.

“We want visitors to experience our hospitality from the moment they land,” said Oginga. “The pandemic hit us hard, but we’re determined to revive our tourism sector, boost revenue, and rejuvenate the economy of this port city.”

The second day will see a colourful street carnival and parade showcasing Mombasa’s cultural diversity, starting at the iconic elephant tusks and ending at Treasury Square. One of the main attractions will be the Tuk Tuk Rally and Drifting Showcase—the first of its kind in Kenya. “This event will be a completely new adventure for locals and visitors alike,” Oginga added.

To enhance tourists’ experiences, Mombasa will launch a new journal detailing key attractions. However, the County acknowledges competition from emerging destinations like Diani and Eldoret. “We’re focusing on strengthening Mombasa’s appeal with new experiences like sports tourism,” Oginga said. citing the recent Rugby Driftwood Sevens, which attracted 6,800 visitors.

The County is also prioritizing domestic tourism, working with the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers to create year-round packages for local travellers. Dr Sam Ikwaye, Executive Officer of the Coast Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers emphasized the need to adapt to changing tourist profiles, saying, “We’re curating fresh offerings, like the Tuk Tuk race, to attract a younger crowd and encourage them to explore Mombasa beyond its beaches.”
