Volleyball favourites Mogonga PAG Boys and Kwanthanze Girls got off to a flying start as the 2019 Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two Nationals Games got underway at Kisumu National Polytechnic yesterday.

Mogonga, who are considered contenders after finishing third in last year’s championship in Nyeri, and Kwanthanze, the girls defending champions, recorded straight set wins in their opening matches to put their title hunt on track.

Mogonga overpowered Lelmokwo Boys 3-0 to give coach Nathan Kiptoo confidence going forward.

“The boys are in good form and they showed that on the pitch. They played so well, showed determination and hunger for national glory. I am confident we have the will to push for the main prize,” said Kiptoo.

In another boys’ match, Tetu from Central region saw off Coast champions and last year’s fourth place finishers Shimoni 3-1.

Meanwhile in girls’ volleyball, multiple national and East Africa champions Kwanthanze from Machakos county started their title defence by flooring debutants Makaror 3-0 in an entertaining tie.

Kwanthanze flied off the blocks first in the Pool B match, winning 25-13, 25-16 and 25-13 in the three sets.

In girls’ Pool A matches, Western’s Bishop Sulumeti, playing their debut match at the national stage, stunned Sega from host region Nyanza 3-1 while Cheptil recorded similar win over Soweto. 

The winning sides will be hoping for second concessive group victories to seal their place in the semi-finals while the losers hope to right their wrongs.

Kwanthanze will play St John’s Kaloleni as Pasenga take on Lelmokwo in Pool B while Soweto meet Sulumeti and Sega face Cheptil in Pool A.

In the boys’ fixtures today, Tetu will feel the weight of Mogonga as Shimoni take on Lelmokwo.
