The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced that this year’s Safari 7s will be held outside Nairobi for the first time ever, with Machakos Stadium chosen as the venue.

KRU cited the move as an opportunity to enhance the fan experience while providing better facilities for both players and supporters.

The Union explained that Machakos offers ample accommodation and essential services, making it a practical choice for the tournament.

“Africa’s premier sevens rugby tournament, Safari 7s, returns this year at Machakos Stadium from October 11 to 13, 2024. This year’s edition promises to elevate the experience for fans, players, and the entire rugby fraternity by breaking away from the traditional Nairobi setting. Machakos emerges as the ideal host, offering a contemporary ambiance with convenient accommodation and other essential services,” the KRU stated.

The Union had confirmed the October 11-13 dates earlier this year, maintaining that the Safari 7s remains one of the most anticipated rugby events in Africa.

First held in 1996, the Safari 7s has grown significantly, attracting top international rugby talent and large crowds of enthusiastic fans. Beyond the thrilling on-field action, the event has developed a festive atmosphere, featuring music, food, and cultural celebrations.

Safari 7s 2023

The 2023 edition, held from November 17 to 19 at the RFUEA Grounds, saw Kenya 7s (Shujaa) claim the title with a commanding 19-0 victory over Samurai in the final.

The event, which was graced by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saw Shujaa dominate throughout the competition.

Star player Patrick Odongo scored the opening try in the final, setting the tone for a strong performance. Kevin Wekesa added another try before Odongo sealed the victory, ensuring Shujaa reclaimed the Safari 7s crown with an undefeated run.

In the women’s category, Uganda’s Lady Cranes edged out Kenya’s Lionesses in a closely contested final, winning 15-12 to lift the title.
