Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa has hinted at an exit from Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party.

Speaking during an interview with one of the local radio stations on Monday, August 12, 2024, Wamalwa stated that Azimio affiliate parties have reached at the point of divorce.

Wamalwa on opposition

He accused President William Ruto of swallowing the entire opposition after he tapped Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which is one of Azimio’s major affiliate parties.

Wamalwa termed the ODM’s move to agree to work with President Ruto as betrayal of the highest order.

“For us as Azimio to actually go into bed with Ruto, is betrayal of the highest order. And that is why as we sit here today, we in Azimio have reached a point of divorce. In a marriage when grounds of a divorce arrive, one of those is when you have irreconcilable differences,” Wamalwa said.

Wamalwa on ODM saving Ruto

According to the former Defense Cabinet Secretary, while Kenyans are pushing to save Kenya from President Ruto whom he termed as Zakayo, ODM is pushing to have Zakayo saved.

“That is where we have reached and we have disagreed as a matter of principle because people are saying Okoa Kenya from Zakayo, but part of Azimio is saying tuokoe Zakayo,” he stated.

Wamalwa on Azimio exit

Wamalwa went ahead to state that he will soon walk in the footsteps of Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua, who has already issued notice to Azimio on her exit.

He further stated that former Agriculture CS Peter Munya’s PNU party has also issued Azimio exit notice and that his DAP-K party will soon do the same.

“I know Martha Karua has been here, she has already given her notice as Narc Kenya, of quitting Azimio. Peter Munya was here and he has also given notice, and very soon Eugene Wamalwa and DAP-K will give notice. But these matters that we are addressing and I can tell you as Azimio, we have lost direction. We are doing something about it and very soon you will hear from us,” Wamalwa said.

Azimio woes

Cracks started emerging in Azimio when the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) that was formed between Azimio and the ruling Kenya Kwanza to chart a way that will put an end to post-election protests, released a report.

Wamalwa protested the report, arguing that it had not incorporated some of the key issues that had been discussed by the committee, such as the high cost of living.

More cracks emerged when Raila who is the Azimio leader, agreed to a dialogue with President Ruto, aimed at ending the Gen Z-led protests.

The Raila-Ruto bromance led to the birth of a broad-based government that swallowed the ODM party, which holds key opposition leadership positions in the National Assembly.

Ruto nominated ODM’s Opiyo Wandayi who held the position of National Assembly Minority Leader, to the Energy and Petroleum docket.

Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Joho, who until their nomination served as ODM Deputy Party Leaders, were proposed to the ministries of Cooperatives and Mining, respectively.

John Mbadi who until his nomination served as the ODM national chairperson, was proposed to the position of CS, National Treasury.
