Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Agnes Chebet World records ratified ahead of Olympics
World Athletics has ratified several world records set over the past seven months by Kenyan athletes Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, and Agnes Jebet Ngetich, just in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Joining them in this prestigious list are Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Mykolas Alekna, and Mondo Duplantis, whose records have also been officially recognized.
Beatrice Chebet record
Beatrice Chebet closed her 2023 season with an exceptional performance, winning the 5km road race in Barcelona on December 31 with a time of 14:13.
This achievement shattered the women-only world record previously held by Senbere Teferi, set in Herzogenaurach on September 12, 2021, by a remarkable 16 seconds.
Just two weeks later, Agnes Jebet Ngetich delivered an equally impressive performance in Valencia, clocking 28:46 in a 10km mixed race. Her half-way split of 14:13 was also a world record. Ngetich’s feat broke Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s world 10km record set in Castellon on February 27, 2022, by 28 seconds, and improved upon Ejgayehu Taye’s 5km world record from Barcelona on December 31, 2021, by six seconds.
Faith Kipyegon, a renowned middle-distance runner and Olympic champion, further solidified her dominance by setting a new world record of 3:49.04 in the 1500m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Paris. This time shaved 0.07 seconds off her previous record set in Florence on June 2, 2023.
In the men’s events, Mykolas Alekna made headlines at the beginning of the outdoor season with a discus throw of 74.35m at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona, breaking the long-standing record set by East Germany’s Jurgen Schult on June 6, 1986. Alekna’s performance has set a new standard in the sport.
Men’s ratified record
Mondo Duplantis, another standout in the field events, broke the men’s pole vault world record with a jump of 6.24m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen. This new record, set just six days after Alekna’s achievement, added a centimeter to Duplantis’s previous record from the Diamond League Final in Eugene last year.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone also continued her dominance in the 400m hurdles. At the US Olympic Trials in June, she set a new world record of 50.65, surpassing her own previous record by 0.03 seconds. This was her fifth world record in the 400m hurdles and her fourth set at Eugene’s Hayward Field.
