The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has signed a Ksh1.19 billion grant with the Federal Republic of Germany to enhance migration in the region.

According to IGAD, the funding will enhance its efforts along key migration corridors, including Moyale, Togwajale, and Nimule–Elegu, bringing direct benefits to migrants, refugees, and host communities by improving access to vital services and infrastructure.

In a statement on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the Authority revealed that the grant, signed by IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu in Djibouti, was facilitated through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“Today in Djibouti, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu signed a landmark Ksh1.19 billion grant agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and KfW Group Corporate Communications to scale up the Regional Migration Fund (RMF)—Phase IV,” read the statement in part.

Speaking when he signed the agreement, Gebeyehu stated that the funding will enhance mobility within the region.

“We thank Germany for its continued trust and partnership. Together, we are making regional mobility safer, smarter, and more dignified,” he stated.

Under a revised implementation framework, IGAD will directly supervise major infrastructure development and provide oversight to implementing partners.

Bridges

This comes months after Kenya and the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia are set to construct two bridges to connect underserved communities between the two countries.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the two countries announced that bridges will be constructed across the River Dawa (Rhamu and Suftu) to facilitate access to healthcare, education, and markets for the local communities.

This was following a bilateral engagement between the two countries led by Ethiopian Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide and the State Department for Investment and Assets Management Principal Secretary (PS) Cyrell Odede Wagunda, convened under the auspices of the IGAD in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Republic of Kenya committed to support the construction of two bridges across River Dawa (Rhamu and Suftu) as a passage of hope that will not only carry vehicles but also convey the aspiration of underserved communities to access healthcare, education, and markets,” read the statement in part.
