Harambee Stars make late additions to squad ahead of Ivory Coast date
The Harambee Stars have made several additions to their squad ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier match against Ivory Coast.
Following their draw against Burundi, the technical bench has summoned Kenya Police defender David “Cheche” Ochieng, who is expected to join the camp for the final training session.
Harambee Stars addition
Clyde Senaji, a defender based in Malawi with Nyasa Bullets, was called up on Saturday. Senaji’s impressive first season with Nyasa Bullets saw him win the FDH Cup, Super League, Challenge Cup, and the Top 8.
Although he missed out on the title in his second season, his performance remained commendable. Despite initially missing the call-up, injuries and challenges in the camp have necessitated his inclusion.
Kenya Police’s David Okoth has also been added to the squad ahead of the vital match. These call-ups come after new recruits Zak Vyner and Tobias Knost, who missed the previous match due to unresolved nationality switch issues, were excluded.
Vyner and Knost, born in England and Germany respectively, faced complications that prevented them from being in the starting lineup or on the reserves against Burundi.
The Harambee Stars began their preparations for the qualifiers on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in Nairobi but have been hampered by injuries, with Joseph Okumu and Eric Ouma among the affected players.
Despite being the home team, Harambee Stars are hosting their games at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi.
This arrangement is due to the unavailability of Kenya’s Nyayo National Stadium and Kasarani Stadium, the only venues provisionally approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international matches.
Both stadiums are currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.
The Harambee Stars are determined to bounce back and secure a positive result against Ivory Coast on Tuesday, June 11, at Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe.
