Lawyer Kipkorir blasts politicians, govt for acting normal amid floods crisis
Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has criticized politicians for seemingly ignoring the devastating impact of ongoing floods in Kenya.
In a statement on his X account, he emphasized that while the country is facing a crisis with hundreds of lives lost and extensive damage to infrastructure, politicians are carrying on as if everything is normal.
He suggested that in a civilized country, the government’s primary focus would be on addressing the flood crisis.
“Kenya is being devastated with floods. Hundreds have died. Schools, houses & roads have been washed away. Yet Politicians continue operating as though things were normal. If Kenya was a civilized country, all Government efforts would be redirected to the floods crisis. BUT!”Korir said in a statement on his X account.
His remarks coincide with reports of severe flooding across various regions, including Mai Mahiu, where at least 40 people have lost their lives and numerous homes have been destroyed.
On Sunday, a boat accident in Kona Punda left over 20 people missing.
Floods displace people
The government has acknowledged the severity of the situation, confirming that more than 131,450 individuals have been displaced by the floods.
They announced that efforts were underway to provide temporary housing for those affected, with collaboration between the Kenya Coast Guard, National Police Service, and Kenya Defense Forces to enhance search and rescue operations.
Furthermore, the flood crisis has disrupted public utilities and infrastructure, with numerous roads affected across the country. Sections of various key roads, including the Mai Mahiu road, have become impassable due to debris and overflowing water courses.
