Some residents of Roka Maweni village, Kilifi county have faulted the National Land Commission (NLC) over its casual handling of their historical injustices even after the enactment of the constitution in 2010.

They also expressed fear that parcels of land rightfully belonging to them are being taken away through alleged opaque lease transaction.

Led by Deche Gogo, they said failing to address the matter perpetrates the  historical land injustices.

He said the trend undermines the constitutional provisions aimed at rectifying past wrongs and ensuring equitable access to land for all Kenyans.

“It seems like the commission is powerless in solving land issues in the coast region. We have written many letters which are just gathering dust in their offices,” he said.

Uphold rights

Gogo called for urgent action to rectify the alleged injustices to uphold rights of the affected communities.

Former Timboni village elder Francis Yongo urged the government to address the injustices, insisting the need for a comprehensive land policy that acknowledges both historical and the current land expropriation.

“The government should come-up with land policies that address the historical and ongoing injustices,” said Yongo.

He said allotment letters which were issued in 2002 and 2007 had numerous errors and their push to have them rectified has not materialised. George Mbwana, another resident, urged the government to revoke all fake tittle deeds.
