The Sports Personality of the Year (SOYA) recently unveiled the finalists for the Schools’ category, marking the return of this prestigious event after its last appearance in 2019.

This announcement brings excitement and recognition to outstanding performances in the school sports arena.

Koyonzo shortlisted

In the boys’ division, five schools have emerged as top contenders: Koyonzo High School, Namwela, St. Anthony’s Boys High School Kitale, Butula Boys, and Onjiko.

These schools have showcased exceptional talent and prowess in various sports disciplines, ranging from rugby to basketball.

Koyonzo Secondary, hailing from the talent-rich Western region, has particularly stood out with remarkable achievements in rugby 7s, clinching both national and East Africa titles.

Their consistent success has solidified their reputation as a powerhouse in the rugby scene.

Another notable contender, Butula Boys, made history as the first team from Busia County to secure the national rugby 15s title and qualify for the games.

Their remarkable journey to the top has inspired many and demonstrated the potential of schools from previously overlooked regions.

St Anthony strides

St. Anthony’s Boys and Onjiko have also made significant strides in Football and basketball.

In the girls’ category, Butere Girls, Kesogon, St. Joseph’s Kitale, Kwanthanze, and Nyamira Girls have demonstrated exceptional talent and resilience in various sports disciplines.

Kesogon Secondary School’s victory over Africa schools’ champions Kwanthanze highlights their determination and skill on the volleyball court.

Despite facing formidable opponents, Kesogon showcased their strength and secured national bragging rights, marking a significant milestone for the school.

Kwanthanze, on the other hand, proved their dominance at the East Africa level, securing a slot in the international school’s volleyball championship.

Nyamira Girls made headlines by ending a 32-year wait for the national trophy and clinching their maiden regional title.

Coaches Justine Kigwari, Isaac Muresia, Stephen Kigai, Peter Mayoyo, and Eliud Okwemba are contenders for the School Coach of the Year accolade.
