Benson Omala produced a Man of the Match performance as he helped Gor Mahia down Nairobi City Stars 1-0 at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday, February 17, 2024.

Omala, whose move to Algeria collapsed during the last mini-transfer window, scored the only goal of the match, which helped Gor Mahia get more crucial points in the title race.

The striker needed four minutes to get his name on the scoresheet as he found the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season. New signing Shariff Musa produced the assist for the league’s current top scorer.

Omala had a chance to score the second when he was set through on goal by Austin Odhiambo, only for his effort to fly over the crossbar. Odhiambo himself had a chance to score, but his free kick from a good spot went wide.

City Stars struggled to settle in a game where K’Ogalo were more dominant before the break.

Simba wa Nairobi asserted themselves more in the second half, but Kevin Omondi saved the day for Gor Mahia with two saves that denied the visitors a chance to equalise and even go ahead.

Omondi, one of the finest goalkeepers this season, was called to action again when he stopped efforts from Dennis Owalo and Robinson Asenwa.

Asenwa thought he had scored when he made his way into K’Ogalo‘s penalty area, but his effort hit the side net.

The Premier League defending champions held on tight to their slim win and secured points that extended their tally to 47 points. The loss means City Stars were unable to get the second place back and consequently dropped to fifth place.

Posta Rangers, who defeated Ulinzi Stars in the other match of the day, went into second place.
