Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

1. Ruto-Koome spat to draw reaction

After Chief Justice Martha Koome defended the judiciary over the attacks by President William Ruto, more reactions are expected from stakeholders and the political leadership today.

Politicians allied with the President are expected to defend him against accusations made by Koome. The CJ, through the Judicial Service Commission which she chairs, previously sent a response that was seen as lukewarm when she asked the judges not to be cowed, but on Monday, January 15, she came out guns blazing in defence of the third arm of government.

“The declaration that they will no longer obey Court Orders and the subsequent actual defiance of the orders granted by the courts are untenable and amount to contempt of court.

“Allowed to continue unabated, we are on the precipice of a constitutional crisis that can lead to untold civil strife. The judiciary and JSC cannot countenance this and will not be part of it,” the Supreme Court president said.

This is a debate that is set to dominate the national dialogue throughout the day, given its weight.

2. Ksh vs dollar exchange rate

After hitting a historic low on Monday against the dollar, the Ksh is expected to draw a lot of attention to how it will fluctuate today in the stock market.

The shilling has struggled against the world’s primary reserve currency as it has continued to depreciate, raising concerns in the market.

Meanwhile, the Sterling Pound hit a high of Ksh204.7687, while the Euro was trading at Ksh175.9498 on Monday, pointing to another front of struggle by the Ksh.

3. AFCON showdowns

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals are gathering speed in Ivory Coast, and soccer lovers across the country and the continent will follow closely the proceedings of matchday three actions.

Burkina Faso and Mauritania will face off in the first match of the day before paving the way for the Tunisia vs Namibia duel.

Mali and South Africa will be the last action of the day.
