March deadline for universities to submit revised accreditation programme
Vice Chancellors and principals of university colleges have until March 1 to submit revised curricula for accreditation.
Commission for University Education (CUE) Secretary, Prof Mike Kuria said the Commission has developed guidelines for review of Teacher Education Programmes (TEPs) with a view to facilitating universities to align curricula for university TEPs to the Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF).
Kuria has written to the Vice Chancellors and Principals university colleges saying the Commission has embarked on preparation of frameworks, policies, guidelines and tools for facilitation of seamless transition to Competency Based Education (CBE) in universities.
This is in line with the ongoing reforms in the education sector and the transition from 8-4-4 system to CBE consisting of 2-6-3-3-3 cycle.
“Development of these guidelines has been done with adequate engagement of relevant stakeholders followed by public participation and sensitization forums. The aim of this letter is to forward to you the guidelines for review of TEPs for implementation as applicable,” said Kuria in a letter to Vice Chancellors and Principals.
Emerging issues
Kuria said universities offering TEPs are required to apply the guidelines provided to revise the curricula for TEPs, ensuring the review addresses emerging issues in teacher education. They are also expected to undertake a needs assessment with engagement of relevant stakeholders in the curriculum review and put in place appropriate academic resources, collaborative arrangements and administrative structures and strategies to support TEPs under CBE.
The guidelines will apply to the review of curriculum for existing university teacher education programmes at bachelors and postgraduate diploma levels TEPs in all modes of delivery – face to face, online, and blended.
Similarly, the guidelines will be used together with the applicable Universities Standards and Guidelines.
“The guidelines indicate the basic information that should be included in a revised curriculum for an existing university teacher education programme and the structure of the revised curriculum should be aligned to the standard format as provided in these guidelines,” the guidelines provide.
