Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

1. Nairobi County firefighters pass-out parade

The Nairobi City County Government Disaster Management and Coordination Sector will today, November 21, 2023, hold its 2nd Firefighting pass-out parade for the second cohort of firefighters, who have undergone training.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is expected to preside over the event at the Kangundo Road Training School from 9:00 am.

Deputy Governor James Muchiri and Bram Simiyu, Chief Officer, Disaster and Risk Management, will also grace the event.

During the function, Governor Sakaja is expected to highlight the steps his administration has taken to improve response to fire and other related incidents in the city, a year after assuming office.

2. Ruto in Europe

President William Ruto’s visit to the European Union (EU) enters its second day today.

The Head of State embarked on a two-day tour of Germany and France on Monday with a focus on strengthening economic ties with both countries and the EU.

The trip also includes advocating for a robust global consensus on climate action in anticipation of COP 28.

Yesterday, President Ruto held talks with various leaders on the sidelines of the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA) summit in Berlin, Germany.

The leaders included German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who pledged to support Kenya’s mission to fight criminal gangs in Haiti, World Bank President Ajay Banga and France President Emmanuel Macron.

During his time in France, Ruto is scheduled to address the European Parliament, where he will discuss various issues, including climate change, peace, and democracy.

3. Launch of Protect Children campaign report

The Directorate of Children Services, in collaboration with LVCT Health, will today unveil “Kenya’s Journey Towards Protecting Children – A Decade of Change (2010-2019)” study report.

According to the institutions, the study is a monumental transformation in advancing the landscape of violence against children (VAC) in Kenya. It scrutinizes the journey in Kenya’s VAC policies, interventions, and implementation mechanisms that have contributed to the decline in VAC prevalence and, along with improvements in disclosure and seeking services for sexual violence, signified noteworthy accomplishments in public health.

The event will be graced by Florence Bore, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizens Affairs, Directorate of Children Services and LVCT Health leadership, representatives from the Ministry of Health (National and County level), Development Partners, Donors, and other key stakeholders.

The event will commemorate the achievements over the last decade and culminate in the unveiling of the study report.

The event will take place at Tamarind Hotel from 7.00 am.

4. Senate’s Committee on Education meeting

The Committee on Education is today scheduled to hold a meeting with relevant stakeholders on the Vocational Training Bill, Senate Bill, 2022.

The Council of Governors are among the stakeholders expected to give their input on the Bill, which among other things seeks to compel all 47 counties to establish Tvet colleges.

The meeting will be held at Mini Chamber, County Hall from 10:00 am.
