Kenyan International Billy Odhiambo has announced his retirement just moments after turning 30 years old.

Odhiambo, a former captain at Mwamba RFC 7s has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional rugby.

This marks the end of an illustrious career that spanned over a decade and earned him a special place in the hearts of rugby enthusiasts in Kenya and around the world.

Odhiambo’s retirement comes after 68 tournaments representing the Kenya Sevens team. His remarkable career is further highlighted by the impressive feat of scoring 111 tries for Kenya. He played in the Commonwealth, Olympics and World Cup.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, Odhiambo expressed his gratitude and love for the sport that has been such a significant part of his life.

He acknowledged the role of faith, family, and fans in his journey.

“As I mark my 30th Birthday and cross over to a new decade, I want to take this chance to announce my retirement from the Sport that I love so much. God has been so good to me ever since I donned that shirt for the first time in 2012 at Port Elizabeth up until the last time in London this year. 11 good years of God’s Grace and favour,” his statement revealed.

Odhiambo appreciation

Odhiambo also expressed his deep appreciation for the support he received from his parents, his siblings, and his wife, ZamZam, and their sons, Zafar and Zaheem, who have been his pillars of strength throughout his career.

“To my loving parents who have supported me throughout this whole journey, I can’t thank you enough. My siblings Awuor who was also my manager, Tim and Fiona I thank you for always being in my corner.

“My wife ZamZam and my sons Zafar and Zaheem who have been my rock , you were part of my ‘why’ , I thank you and I love you.”

Odhiambo extended his gratitude to the entire rugby community, including coaches, management, mentors, teammates, and even opponents who played a role in shaping his journey and making him a better athlete and man.

He thanked the fans who have stood by him and held him accountable, showing immense love and support throughout his rugby career.

“All my coaches, management, mentors, teammates and even opponents who have been part of my journey, I thank you for believing in me and making me a better man.

“To you the fans who have stood by me and held me accountable throughout this journey, I thank you and I love you all.

“Excited to see what the future holds in store. Billy ‘ The kid’ Odhiambo out,” he announced.
