Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
1. Utamaduni Day celebrations at Bomas
President William Ruto will today lead the nation to mark the inaugural Utamaduni Day celebrations at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi. Senior State officials and members of the diplomatic corps are expected to grace the event.
The public holiday, formally known as Moi Day, is set aside to celebrate the country’s rich cultural diversity and heritage.
State House Chief of Staff Felix Koskei yesterday said the State Department for Culture, Arts and Heritage had planned to mark the day by holding a major cultural event at Bomas.
In a separate statement, Ummi Bashir, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Culture, Arts and Heritage, said the government had made arrangements to have the celebrations in all constituencies across the country.
The focus for this year’s celebrations is on public engagement, street fairs, food festivals, cultural performances and cultural exhibitions, all highlighting the country’s cultural traditions.
“Utamaduni Day underscores Kenya’s commitment to celebrating diversity and unity, fostering a more inclusive future,” she said.
“The national celebrations will take place at the esteemed Bomas of Kenya, with the honourable presence of His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of Kenya, and other distinguished dignitaries. As we prepare to celebrate Utamaduni Day, we unite in the spirit of our diversity, recognizing that our differences are the threads that weave the tapestry of our nation. Together, we forge a path towards a more inclusive, equitable, and just Kenya.
To make the day a success, the PS encouraged Kenyans to actively participate in discussions, workshops, and cultural showcases that emphasize the country’s diverse heritage.
2. Street fairs & food festivals
As the country marks its inaugural Utamaduni Day celebrations today, the government has lined up a series of events to showcase the country’s rich cultural diversity and heritage.
According to PS Bashir, some of the activities include vibrant street fairs which will be organized in all constituencies. Other fun activities to expect today include food festivals where various communities will showcase different dishes.
The national government in collaboration with all 47 counties has also made plans to treat Kenyans to cultural performances as well as cultural exhibitions and public engagements at the grassroots level.
Governors and area members of parliament are expected to attend the events and interact with their constituents.
