Senators want Turkana Sh100b spend probed
Senators have directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to launch investigations into the expenditure of more than Sh100 billion received by the Turkana county government since the onset of devolution in 2013.
This even as the Senators said that if EACC does not nail the former county officials, it should be disbanded.
The lawmakers called on the anti-graft agency to immediately commence investigations into the use of the funds, describing the county government as a “crime scene” with nothing to show for the last 10 years of devolution.
This is after the Senate County Public Accounts Committee chaired by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ unearthed several cases of financial malpractices and mismanagement in the county government, pointing to wanton plunder of public resources.
While touring the projects rolled out by the former Governor Josephat Nanok’s administration, the Senators came face to face with the grim reality of high octane schemes of blatant theft, impunity and widespread malpractices in procurement and tendering processes.
Kajwang’ said they were expecting to see new health facilities, water and agriculture projects to account for the over Sh100 billion Turkana has received over the last 10 years but they have been confronted with stories of one stalled project after another, corruption and mismanagement of financial resources all the way from the county executive and the county assembly.
