Gor Mahia FC head coach, Johnathan McKinstry, has likened Kakamega Homeboyz to Millwall in terms of their physical style of play.

The defending champions of the FKF Premier League were aiming for their third consecutive victory when they faced Kakamega Homeboyz.

Gor Mahia lead early on

They took an early lead at Bukhungu Stadium with a goal from Benson Omalla, but that lead was cancelled out 42 minutes later when Shami Kibwana scored.

After the match, McKinstry commented on the physicality of certain stadiums and teams. He mentioned that in England, playing away to Millwall is always expected to be a tough and physical encounter.

He then drew a parallel in Kenya, stating that Kakamega Homeboyz is one of the teams known for their physical style of play.

“It is always a physical encounter here, there are some stadiums around the world when you go there you know it’s going to be a tough physical encounter. In England, you go to Millwall away you know it’s going to be a tough physical encounter,” he said after the match.

McKinstry emphasized that there are various styles of football, and a team can play in different ways, whether it’s a possession-based style like Ajax or an approach like Burnley.

Gor Mahia ready to adapt

He stressed that playing a physical game doesn’t necessarily mean a team is inferior. The coach also acknowledged that they were well aware of the challenge they would face against Kakamega Homeboyz, who effectively use their home advantage.

“There is no one way to play football, there are many ways, you can play like Ajax or Burnley, it doesn’t mean you are bad.

“We knew what we would face and we knew Kakamega Homeboyz use the home advantage well. It wasn’t a surprise and as we said after Ulinzi game, if teams want a physical encounter we don’t have a problem with that we can have it and if want to play and we have a nice surface, we will go on and play,” he added.

McKinstry expressed satisfaction with securing a point in the match. “It’s all about picking a point and am pleased with that,” he concluded.
