‘There is more to come’- Gor Mahia coach declares after whipping City Stars
Gor Mahia FC’s head coach, Johnathan Mckinstry, is optimistic about his team’s potential and believes they have not yet reached their highest level of performance.
Following three rounds of play, Gor Mahia have closed the gap in the league and are now tied on points with league leaders Posta Rangers, although the mailmen have a superior goal difference.
Gor Mahia grab win
The defending champions made a significant move towards securing points with a convincing 4-1 victory over Nairobi City Stars.
This win marked their second victory of the season, following an opening match draw with Sofapaka.
Speaking to the club’s media after the match, Coach Mckinstry revealed that they had been working on improving various aspects of their game to increase competitiveness within the team.
He expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance against City Stars.
“We’ve reinforced certain areas to raise the competition within the team… We are pleased with the performance against City Stars, and we know there is a higher level we can reach – there is more to come,” he said.
Gor Mahia’s goals
In the match, which took place at Moi Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, September 17, 2023, Benson Omala, who finished as the runner-up in the scorers’ chart last season, scored two goals.
Rooney Onyango netted the third goal, and Austin Odhiambo scored the fourth. Nairobi City Stars managed to score one goal, courtesy of Dennis Oalo.
Onyango, who was later named the man of the match, was a standout performer for Gor Mahia, as he provided two assists, setting up Omala for his second goal and Odhiambo for the fourth.
City Stars’ goal came from a scramble in Gor Mahia’s penalty area following a free-kick awarded to their opponents, denying Gor Mahia a clean sheet.
