Wetang’ula names team to probe Worldcoin project
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced the formation of a Joint ad hoc committee to investigate the activities of the crypto-currency project Worldcoin and table a report to the House within 42 days.
In a communication to MPs, Wetang’ula announced the team will comprise 15 members-five members each drawn from the departmental committees on Administration and Internal Security, Communication, Information and Innovation and Tourism and Wildlife.
He told the MPs his decision is based on the fact that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindike and his counterpart for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo were scheduled to appear before MPs for a second time to clarify how the company was registered, whether the data collected amounted to a breach of security and what measures the government has put in place to avoid a recurrence.
“I want to inform you that each of the three committees has nominated five members from their respective memberships,” stated Wetang’ula.
He added: “In view of the foregoing, Hon members, the two Cabinet Secretaries that were scheduled to appear tomorrow before this House, will instead appear before the Joint Committee to provide information on the matter.”
The Joint Committee to be led by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo will focus on examining the operations of Worldcoin in Kenya.
During its investigations, the committee will be expected to also meet various ministries, departments and agencies. Among those in the departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security who will sit in the committee include Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Caroline Ng’elechei (Elgeyo Marakwet) Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), and Sara Korere (Laikipia North).
Those from the Departmental Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation are the chairperson, John Kiarie (Dagoretti South), Geoffrey Wandeto (Tetu), Gideon Kimaiyo (Keiyo South), Shakeel Shabbir (Kisumu East), and Nominated Irene Mayaka.
Those from Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife are the chairperson, Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North), Edwin Gichuki (Mathioya), Captain Ruweida Obo (Lamu East) and Innocent Maino Mugabe (Likuyani).
