The Kenya women’s 15s rugby team (Lionesses) have improved on its global rankings, World Rugby has announced.

Revealed on their website on Tuesday, the statement read, “Kenya have moved up two places to 23rd after Saturday’s 29-20 win over Madagascar in the opening round of this year’s Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Division 1.”

The Lionesses picked up 1.26 points and that was enough to move them above both Portugal and Trinidad and Tobago in the world’s women’s rugby rankings.

The lionesses now have 46.52 points, giving them a slim advantage over Trinidad and Tobago, while the gap between themselves and China in 22nd position is a sizable 2.82 points.

Kenya is currently in Antananarivo, Madagascar participating in Africa’s women’s rugby division one championships in a battle between them, hosts Madagascar whom they defeated in the match opener on Saturday, South Africa and Cameroon.

This should be good news for Kenyan rugby after Shujaa’s 20 year stint in the World Sevens Series came to an end on Sunday in London.
