After a prolonged season of drought precipitated by the hot sun that has resulted in heavy losses of livelihood and massive displacement of populations, the weatherman is now giving Kenyans a glimmer of hope.

The latest report by the Kenya Meteorological Services Department indicates that rainfall is expected in some parts of the country at the end of the week.

But the Met department has also warned Kenyans in various parts of the country, particularly in Nairobi, parts of Rift Valley and North Eastern, to brace themselves for hot temperatures that would likely rise above 30 degrees Celsius.

Sunny and dry

Although various parts of the country are expected to remain sunny and dry, the weatherman says that Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley and isolated areas of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley are expected to receive substantial rainfall. “Average daytime (maximum) temperatures are likely to be high (more than 30 degrees Celsius) over most parts of the country except the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and parts of South-Eastern lowlands where temperatures are expected to be moderate (25-30 degrees Celsius). Average night-time (minimum) temperatures are likely to be low (less than 10 degrees Celsius) over several parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley,” David Gikungu (pictured), the director of Meteorological Services said in a statement.

Occasional rainfall

Gikungu said some parts of the country including Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Baringo and Nakuru counties will likely experience a sunny period but have occasional rainfall towards the end of the forecast period.

“Afternoon showers are expected over a few places. Showers are expected over a few places at night from Friday. Maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to be between 25 degrees Celsisu and 33o C. Minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to range from 10 degrees Celsius to 21degrees Celsius,” added Gikungu.
