Gachagua: Raila Odinga brings nothing to the table

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once expressed confidence that the United Opposition will defeat President William Ruto in the coming general elections.
Speaking during an engagement session with Kenyans in Seattle on Friday, July 11, 2025, Gachagua mocked the formation of the broad-based government, arguing that even together, the opposition will unseat Ruto because former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has lost significant popular support.
The former Deputy President also said that the dream of making Ruto a one‑term president is still alive because Kenyans have lost faith in his leadership.
“I can tell you Raila Odinga brings nothing to the table, the Kambas were behind him, but they have left, the Kisiis have left, the Luhyas have left, the Masaais have left; the Luo nation has been divided in the middle, even if they are together, we will beat them 70 plus one,”Gachagua said.
“If Raila decides to run, Ruto will be number four in the election, either way, he is one term, so there is no problem, do not be worried the people of Kenya have made decisions which are finalised and nothing will change, 70% of Kenyans do not want him back.”

Gachagua on winning elections
This comes after Gachagua during an interview with local media station on May 12, 2025, emphasised the need for a united opposition front with a clear strategy to defeat President William Ruto in the next general election, arguing that his support for Matiang’i would depend on an agreed “formula” among opposition leaders, not individual ambitions.
“I am ready to support Matiang’i if the formula settles on him. But it cannot be forced that it must be him. That would mean we’ve lost direction,” Gachagua explained.
“The most important thing is the formula to remove Ruto. If that formula favours Matiang’i, he will be our candidate and he will win. If it favours me or Kalonzo Musyoka, we will also support and win. But we must work as one team,” he added.

Gachagua stressed that Kenya’s current economic and political challenges cannot be solved by a single individual, expressing his willingness to play any role in such a coalition, even if it’s not the presidency.
“I don’t have to be president. I can be anything else. But I want to be part of that team. Matiang’i also wants to be part of that team. Kalonzo too. We must put the country above our personal interests,” he said.
“But, you can’t tell me that Rigathi Gachagua, who has united all his people, should support someone who doesn’t have all his people behind him. I would be a fool,” he asserted.
