250 unclaimed bodies in Nairobi mortuaries disposed
Nairobi City County Health Services has disposed of 250 bodies that lay unclaimed in various county mortuaries.
County Executive, Health, Wellness and Nutrition Dr. Anastasia Nyalita revealed that all the 250 unclaimed bodies had been disposed of in a notice dated February 11, 2023.
Nyalita said the unclaimed bodies were disposed of on February 10, following a court order a day earlier.
“The City court on 9th of February granted the Health sector directions/orders for disposal of the Unclaimed bodies in accordance with the Public health Act. Cap 242 Laws of Kenya (LoK). Unclaimed bodies were disposed on 10th February,” Nyalita said in a notice dated February 11, 2023.
The 250 unclaimed bodies were being preserved in City Mortuary, Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital mortuary and the Mbagathi hospital mortuary.
The disposal of the 250 bodies comes weeks after the Nairobi county government issued a 7-day notice to members of the public to collect 292 unclaimed bodies from three city morgues.
County Secretary Jairus Musumba said 214 bodies were at the City Mortuary, 50 at Mbagathi Hospital funeral home and 28 at Mama Lucy Hospital mortuary.
The public notice contained details of the deceased persons including names, gender and dates of admission.
Musumba urged members to identify and collect the bodies within one week, failure to which the bodies were to be disposed of at city cemeteries.
The notice dated February 11, 2023, indicated that 42 bodies were collected after the 7-day notice was issued.
“Upon expiry of the seven (7) days newspaper notice, a total of 42 bodies had been identified and claimed respectively. The Nairobi City County Health, Wellness and Nutrition sector made an application before the City Court in a miscellaneous application no. 2 of 2023. This came up for mention on 9th
February, 2023,” the notice reads in part.
