Vihiga Queens went top of the Women Premier League (WPL) in style after hammering hapless Kangemi Ladies 11-0 on Wednesday.

This was the largest win by a mile in a single game in the history of the WPL.

Maurine Achieng and Janet Moraa had hattricks in the match with Achieng netting hers in the 7th minute,26th minute and 49th minute.

Moraa’s goals came in the 30th minute,44th minute and 78th minute as the visitors fell apart in the game.

Other scorers in this game for Queens came courtesy of Faith Ongachi in the 53rd minute and 58th minute with Diana Cherono, Keben Robai and Phelisters Kadari each with a goal input as well in the carnage.

The win solidifies Vihiga Queens’ stake at the top of the standings albeit with two wins in two games including an impressive 13-goal difference to their name.

The defending league Champions are looking to get another trophy to their cabinet.

In another match played midweek, Kisumu All-Starlets recovered from a losing run to post their first win of the season following a 2-1 win against Bunyore Starlets.

Kisumu got their goals late in the first half courtesy of Beverline Adika’s 39th-minute effort and Monica Etot’s 45th-minute neat finish in the box.

The consolation for Bunyore came against the run of play in the 78th minute through Mildred Ochenge.

Hard-fought win

This hard-fought win means the Lakeside ladies are now up to eighth on the log with three points after three matches played.

Their first two matches of the campaign ended in losses. As for Bunyore, they are currently seventh on the log with three points as well from two matches so far played by the Westerners.

In another fixture, Wadadia got full points after Kayole Starlets did not show. The forfeiture means struggling Kayole have zero points and are deep in relegation troubles.

The three points for Wadadia push them to ninth place. The team has currently a -2 goal difference after conceding five goals in three games.

Meanwhile, British Roopa Vyas, who is on the board for female fottball fans group Her Game Too – set up last year to tackle sexism in sport – says Everton set a “good example” and are one of 62 professional clubs who are partnered with the organisation.

In August, Everton issued a “lengthy stadium ban” to a supporter for sexually assaulting a female fan during a match a Goodison Park. It was a rare occasion where a club publicly took action.

“A lot of clubs will look into things but then may not respond or take the action that people expect, like banning a fan,” she said. “I think it’s moving in the right direction, Everton’s approach was great but I want to see that consistently.”

Over the last year, Her Game Too has received more than 80 reports of sexual harassment or abuse at football matches.

Roopa, who is a Her Game Too ambassador for Liverpool, says the numbers will be higher, but cites several reasons that women do not come forward, including inadequate reporting systems and sexism not always being recognised alongside other types of discrimination.

Anti-discrimination campaign group Kick it Out received eight reports of incidents based on gender in the professional game for the 2021-22 season. That compares to 183 for race-related incidents and 108 based on sexual orientation.
