Fanfare marks 50th edition of Concours D’Elegance festival
In what was one of the most memorable automobile events in the calendar, the 50th edition of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Concours D’Elegance lived up to expectations at the Ngong Racecourse with glitz and class dominating the runway for both old cars and motorcycles alike.
For the umpteenth time, the bikes category went to Sati Gata Aura in a 1925 DKE make garnering 192 points followed closely by Dominic Antoine in a Triumph 550-SD 1925 bike who earned 186 points. In the third position was Russell Hughes in his Ducati machine.
In the cars category, siblings Adrian Wroe’s 1930 Ford Model A make garnered a total of 282 points followed by sister Veronica’s 1934 Rolls Royce Boatail make.
Duncan May won the most elegant motorbike award with Alfa Romeo Club Chairman and Principal Secretary Trade and Enterprise Development Kevit Desai taking home the cars award in elegance.
In the Utility Vehicle 4 Wheel Drive manufactured after 1970, Tumaini Muthiga showcased a sparkling 1986 Volkswagen Kombi and amassed the top spot with 213 points and only followed at distance by Jibran Somra in his 1979 Range Rover machine picking 203 points in the process.
Wolfgang Omondi in his 1971 Volkswagen Kombi make came in third with 202 points. Tumaini who entered five machines in the competition measured up in the areas of maintenance, cleanliness and drivability conditions.
In the Utility Vehicles 4Wheel Driver made in 1971 and earlier, Garry Farrant was first with his 1969 Land Rover with judges in a unanimous decision as he earned an incredible 255 points. Following up in second place was Mohamed Fatehdin in his 75-year-old Ford V8 Pick-Up with 245 points.
Rift Valley Technical Training Institute lined up a 1970 Volkswagen Pick-Up rebuilt picking 232 points in the process.
Another exciting class saw Touring Cars up to 1000cc line up three competitors.
Vitafoam Products Limited paraded a 1972 Austin Mini ride and ultimately elated the judges’ desk to earn an impressive 270 points. Evanson Ndung’u with his 1961 Mini Morris picked up the second spot with 229 points in the bag with the car mostly gaining numbers on maintenance. The ever-present Tumaini Muthiga in his 1973 Mini Morris Car No.15 was third in the CC class.
Overall winner
In the Touring Cars 1301cc to 1600cc, the previous overall winner Sati Gara-Aura won the class with 275 points driving the Nissan 160J.
Runners-up in this category was Gursharan Singh with a 1980 Alstud Sprint picking 235 points while Cliff Brown showcasing a 1957 Volkswagen Beetle picked 210 points.
Meanwhile in the Street Motorcycles up to 650 cc, Mahraj Singh Jabbal with a well-kept 1962 BMW bike earned 169 points to come top. Eric Hallard had a 1995 Total Enfield Bullet getting 146 points with Gary Farrant once again on the podium earning 109 points in his 2011 Vespa Scooter and getting the third spot.
In the Street Motorcycles from 651cc to 100cc was Sandeep Singh Sura winning with a 1969 Honda 750 bike earning 172 points. Second place was once again Tumaini Muthiga albeit on a distant 149 points with his 1985 Honda VFR-750.
Closing the podium spits was third-placed David Odhuno in a 1989 Yamaha Super Temere with 136 points being his portion. Coming in fourth was the 2001 Honda Shadow Aero VT-750 belonging to Kevin Wariuko Maimba with 134 points.
