Safina party Presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi has been denied clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for failing to provide a degree certificate.

Wanjigi, instead of providing a degree certificate to the electoral body, attached transcripts to prove that he underwent tertiary education.

His running mate Willis Otieno accused IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati of clearing former comedian Walter Mong’are Nyambane on the basis of transcripts, instead of a degree certificate.

Wanjigi also failed to provide enough signatures to support his candidature.

“We have allowed others who have problems with signatures to harmonise, and we can also allow you in the remaining hours to do so. But you must bring a physical copy of your degree certificate before I clear you,” Chebukati said.

Jimi Wanjigi’s IDs

Wanjigi is also said to have presented different IDs, raising the eyebrows of election officials on his integrity.

In his defence, Wanjigi said that his opponents were out to lock him out of the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“It is very clear what is going on here. There is a very clear mchujo (sieving) that is being decided elsewhere not here. You cannot apply different rules to different people. And if this is the intention and your direction as a commission then I fear greatly for the coming election,” Wanjigi said.

Other Presidential aspirants that have been denied clearance by IEBC include Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot and evangelist Reuben kigame.
