“I will not resign over my support for Raila Odinga,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said yesterday.

Matiang’i, who has come under pressure to resign from Deputy President William Ruto’s allies for expressing his support for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, said he would do whatever President Uhuru Kenyatta asks of him.

He further stated that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was an independent entity that could not be swayed by anybody.

The CS and his Cabinet colleagues Joe Mucheru (ICT) and Eugene Wamalwa (Defence) have come under fire for appearing to campaign for Raila, to succeed President Uhuru.

Busy bodies

Among those who have called on the CSs to resign are Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, Garissa Township MP Aden Duale and Soy MP Caleb Kositany. 

“ I work for the President and so if he tells me to turn right or left I unconditionally oblige.”

Yesterday, Matiang’i while speaking in Limuru, Kiambu County, stated that nobody will distract him from discharging his duties.

“There are two types of people, those who perform their duties as per their job descriptions and those who don’t.

I belong to the former,” he said adding that his ministry’s duty will be to ensure that the 2022 polls are peaceful.

The CS who was flanked by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, members of the Parliamentary Security Committee led by their chairman Peter Mwathi where he commissioned the Limuru Police Divisional headquarters as well as the Ndeiya subcounty headquarters before inspecting national government projects in the constituency.

Kibicho told the CS not to be distracted by his detractors who he dismissed as busy bodies: “Ignore the busy bodies.

They have no responsibility nor accountability whereas we are accountable to Kenyans and the appointing authority.”

Mwathi said that Kenyans should support Uhuru more so owing to his unmatched development record particularly the road infrastructure and health as well as agriculture sector.
